Join us for this UniSQ Thought Leadership Series event, where our panel will examine how Australia’s systems of governance are responding to declining public trust and the rise of artificial intelligence. We’ll explore how governance can evolve in the digital age to deliver better outcomes for communities, particularly in regional areas.

Meet the panel

Bruce Cowley is an esteemed Australian corporate governance professional, lawyer, author, and non-executive director with a career spanning over four decades. He previously served as the Global Chair of MinterEllison and now holds numerous significant board appointments, including roles with Australian Retirement Trust, the Australian Government Takeovers Panel, and the South Bank Corporation. Bruce is a member of the Expert Council on University Governance, a government-appointed body. Recognised as an expert in corporate governance, he has authored books such as Directorship in Context. Bruce is a recipient of the AICD Gold Medal and the Queensland Law Society President’s Medal.
Rural entrepreneur Julia Spicer OAM is Deputy Chair of Australia’s Economic Accelerator and past Queensland Chief Entrepreneur. Based in Goondiwindi, she founded Engage & Create Consulting and The Goondiwindi Business Hub, driving innovation and growth across regional Australia. Passionate about empowering women and First Nations entrepreneurs, Julia helps businesses thrive through strategic planning, coaching, and investment readiness. Recognised as a catalyst for positive change, she was awarded an OAM for her service to regional business and named among the AFR’s 100 Women of Influence and the Queensland Government’s 100 Faces of Small Business. She is a current Councillor for Goondiwindi Regional Council.
Sean Johnson is a governance adviser, lawyer, and researcher specialising in institutional design, digital transformation, and governance reform. His current research explores regional governance, platform institutions, and the future of professional stewardship in Australia. His work looks at redesigning governance systems for coherence, accountability, and community trust. Sean’s work spans practical governance as a Company Secretary to theoretical research on governance friction, legitimacy, and the challenges of governing in complex, digital environments. Sean is a Fellow of the Governance Institute of Australia, a member of Queensland State Council, and the lead of the Regional Members Committee.
Dr Aaron Timoshanko is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Law and Justice at 91ÆÆ½â°æ. He has been the School’s Honours Program Director since 2021. Aaron has previously held positions at QUT, Griffith University and Flinders University. His main research foci lie in corporate law, accountability, and regulatory theory. Aaron’s PhD thesis was conferred in 2018 by Monash University and was awarded the 2018 Mollie Holman Medal for the best thesis for the Faculty of Law. Aaron has been teaching business and company law since 2017.
Dr Jasmine Thomas is Associate Director of ICT Governance and Partnerships at 91ÆÆ½â°æ. With a background in law, learning and teaching, and digital transformation, she brings over a decade of leadership experience across governance, project management, and educational innovation. Jasmine has led major institutional initiatives, including academic integrity reform, enterprise system consolidation and digital media adoption. She has also lectured in technology law, privacy law, and legal research, and is a frequent invited speaker on academic integrity and technology in higher education.
